In the late Middle Ages, Umbria became the centre of a cultural-religious devotion, which involved religious and secular sites in the vicinity of the two ancient Umbrian Roman roads of greatest transit, the Via Flaminia and the Via Amerina, with their side roads. From the 13th century, a strong impulse of pilgrimage arose, linked to the cult for the tomb of Saint Francis of Assisi and the places dearest to him, and later for the indulgence of the Porziuncola. From being a transit region, Umbria became a pilgrimage destination, reached from various parts of Europe along the best known routes.
The investigation of graffiti evidence today allows for a mapping of the places of passage and a rediscovery of these ancient itineraries.
